Douglas O. Hoag

February 22, 1936 ~ September 22, 2016 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Troy - Douglas 0. Hoag, 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 22, 2016, at home with his family by his side.

Born on February 22, 1936, in Johnsonville, NY, the son of Alvin and Catherine Oliver Hoag, he and his two brothers, Alvin Jr. and Howard, attended Hoosic Valley High School where he was a standout athlete. After graduation Doug joined the US Navy where he proudly served on the USS New Jersey Battleship at the end of the Korean War. He continued, with the help of his shipmates, until his final days supporting the restoration of his ship.

Doug married his first wife Marilyn Lewis in 1954 and they lived in the house that he built in Pittstown, NY. They had two children, Laureen and Scott, and raised them together until Marilyn's passing in 1974. In 1979 Doug married
his current wife of 37 years Kathleen Breton. Together they had their son Stephen and lived in Brunswick, NY. Doug attended Siena College in Albany, NY while he supported his family by working at Norton Company for 39 years until he retired at age 60.

In retirement Doug and Kathy enjoyed summers at their lake house on Taconic Lake in Grafton, NY and spending time with their grandchildren. Doug was also a member of the Pittstown United Methodist Church and was active in his local VFW, Brunswick Lodge of Elks, Johnsonville Grange and the Norton Retiree Club. Many of his mornings were spent sharing coffee and stories with his buddies at Christian's Garage in Eagle Mills, NY All of Doug's family and friends will miss him dearly and always remember his quick wit, bright mind and hands that could fix anything.

Doug was predeceased by his parents Alvin and Catherine, brother Alvin Jr and first wife Marilyn. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, his children, Laurie (Frank Toti), Scott (Jodi) and Stephen (Amanda). His brother, Howie (Bertha), sister in law, Louanne Hoag, brother in law, James Breton (Delores), sister in law, Mary Kay and John Oliver, sisters in law, Donna Lewis Treadway (Tom) and Gloria Calhoun (Emory), brother in law Gary Lewis. As well as his adoring grandchildren Marisa Toti, Cooper and Delaney Hoag, Eloise and Adeline Hoag along with several nieces and nephews.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Kristin Santos and her staff, Eddy Visiting Nurses and The Community Hospice of  Rensselaer County for their care and support for Doug and his family.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 4-7 PM. 

A celebration of Doug's life will be held Thursday at 10:30 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Randall Patterson and Rev. Thomas Hubbard, officiating.

Interment will be in  Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.
