Helen Dougherty Givney, 100

Troy - Helen Dougherty Givney, 100, of Diamond Ridge, died Thursday September 4, 2008 at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness.

Born and lived in Troy all her life, she was daughter of the late Thomas F. Dougherty and Catherine A. (Farrell) Dougherty and wife of the late John J. Givney Sr. She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and Albany Business College.

Mrs. Givney worked for the New York State Assembly for 13 years and prior to that for Montgomery Ward and the Rensselaer County Department of Social Services.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, the Women's Club of St. Francis de Sales Church in Troy and Catholic Charities.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda A. Carroll of Broad Brook, CT and Patricia M. Givney of Troy; a daughter-in-law Ella B. Givney of Pittstown; her grandchildren, Thomas and James Carroll, Kelly Kissell, Michael, Stephen and Matthew Givney, Lisa Davey and Michael Klimkewicz; 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, former Troy Police Chief John J. Givney Jr.; a sister, Katherine Paladan and two brothers, Thomas F. Dougherty and John Dougherty.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 9AM at Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy and at 9:30AM at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Rev. Randall Patterson, Pastor, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 5-8PM.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy. Contributions may be made in memory of Helen Givney to American Cancer Society 260 Osborne Road Loudonville, NY 12211.
