Walter T. Hughes, Sr.

North Greenbush - After reaching his goal of making it to 95, Walter T. Hughes Sr. passed peacefully, Sunday, March 20, 2022, at his residence with his wife of 68 years by his side.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Walter Hughes and Florence Hosford Hughes. He had resided in the Troy and North Greenbush areas all his life.  He enjoyed his time-share in Aruba for over 25 years and was a 1945 graduate of Troy High School. 

Walter  was employed in retail sales for 24 years at Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Colonie and prior to that worked at J.M. Warren & Co and Albany Hardware & Iron.

He was an active member of the Troy Lodge of Elks #141 for over 45 years and was Past Elk of the Year, Past Exalted Ruler, Past Officer of the Year, Past Citizen of the Year and Past Trustee Chairman.  He was also a member and past president of the former Kiwanis Club of Wynantskill and a Navy veteran of World War II with a rank of Yeoman Third Class. Walter was a wonderful Poppy and enjoyed attending most of his grandchildren’s sporting events throughout their grade and high school years. 

Survivors in addition to his wife, Irene M. Mackay Hughes include two sons, Walter T.  (Jo-Anne) Hughes Jr. and Robert A. (Denise) Hughes; five grandchildren, Robert, Austin, Evan, Laurissia and Cai-Lin; a brother, Kenneth E. Hughes; his favorite niece, Pamela I. Edwards and several additional nieces and nephews.  

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc.  276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Wednesday, March 23, 2022  from 9-11AM  with a funeral service to follow at 11AM. 

Interment will be in  Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.
