Green Island - Vera Catherine Teetsell Whitman, 83, died Friday, November 8, 2024, at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Catskill, NY, she was daughter of the late William Teetsell and Nellie Rose Teetsell and husband for 49 years of Gerald W. Whitman. She was raised in Philmont, NY and resided in the Troy area since the early 60's. Vera was a graduate of Ockawamick High School, earned her Associates degree from the State University of New York at Cobleskill and her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Russell Sage College. 

Vera was a teacher at St. John's Day School, Rensselaer County ARC for 8 years and for 35 years in the Enlarged City School District of Troy at schools, 16, 2, and 18, retiring in July of 2001 .   

She was a member of the Red Hat Society of Brunswick, the Gideon’s Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the PTA, a former member, Elder and Deacon of Third Presbyterian Church in Troy and current member of Hope United Methodist Church in Eagle Mills.  

Survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Kirsten (Joseph) Whitman-Hope, Troy, a son, Kurt Whitman, Troy, three grandchildren, Alyssa Allen, Ethan Whitman and Victoria Hope; a sister, Gertrude (Al) Keller, Vero Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Ellen Allen and Alfreda McMurray and a brother, Clyde Teetsel.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc.  276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Tuesday, November12, 2024 from 4-7PM.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, November13, 2024 at 10AM at Hope United Methodist Church 566 Brunswick Road Eagle Mills with Rev. David Martin, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in  Memory Gardens Colonie.
