LATHAM - Toros Shamlian, Jr. 90, of Latham, passed away September 5, 2024, at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness. Born and raised in Troy, he was the son of the late Toros Shamlian, Sr. and Mary (Djehezian) Shamlian. He was the “best damn brother in world” to the late Harry T. Shamlian and was dear brother-in-law to the late Lucille “Dolly” (Chichakian) Shamlian.
Toros was a graduate of Troy High and Siena College, class of 1956 and immediately began his career as a CPA for Shay, Lutz, Schwartz, and King. Shortly thereafter he was drafted and proudly served his country in the US Army. Upon discharge, he continued his career and was named a partner in the firm in 1962. Toros was known as an accountant’s accountant taking immense pride in delivering a high level of professional service and technical expertise to his clients. Following his retirement in 1991, he continued to provide accounting, tax and business advice throughout the remainder of his life for family and friends. He is fondly remembered by colleagues as someone who always made time to mentor others and to add enjoyment and levity to the office. Everyone at the firm was welcome to his endless candy drawer which he maintained in his office. At Thanksgiving and Christmas everyone heard Toros’s “Gobble, Gobble” and “Ho-Ho-Ho”; over the office intercom to celebrate the season.
Toros was deeply devoted to St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church in Watervliet. A Godfather of the church, he was the go-to guy when someone had a question related to the Church’s finances. He worked tirelessly over the years, raising money for building projects, helping set up accounting systems and being the overall financial conscience of the Parish. His faith and dedication to his church were cornerstones of his life.
Toros was also an avid supporter of Siena College, which he believed “changed my life.” He actively supported the school and established a scholarship to help those students academically talented but in financial need.
“Uncle T” was deeply devoted to his family. Known for his funny play on words and “precise” punctuality. He will be profoundly missed by his three nephews, their wives and great nephews and nieces. He is survived by Craig T. Shamlian (Karin) of Latham, David S. Shamlian (Kathi) of Guilderland, Harry R. Shamlian (Kate) of Latham, Adam (Kim), Matt (Robbi), Nick, Caroline (Jeff), Sarah, Elizabeth, and Victoria. Uncle T’s affection and involvement were gifts. He showed up - he paid attention - he listened – he truly cared. His family meant everything to him, and him to them.
