Troy - Thomas D. Rooney, 78, died Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Rooney Sr. and Ann Owens Rooney and beloved husband for 58 years of his soul mate, Phyllis Wagar Rooney. He had resided in Troy and Eagle Mills all his life and was a graduate of Tamarac High School.
Thomas was employed as a pipe fitter for Local 40 International Association of Insulation and Asbestos Workers for 16 years retiring in 2001 after an accident in the job.
He was a member of the Veterans of Lansingburgh and on the Board of Directors. He was also a member and long time President of the North Troy Rod and Gun Club and was instrumental in the merger of the North Troy and STAG Rod and Gun and the first President of North Troy STAG Rod and Gun serving for 8 years. He loved hunting and fishing, spending summers at Cossayuna Lake and the Adirondacks. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. Thomas was an MP in the Army stationed in Germany and Kansas with a rank of SP5 during the Vietnam era.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Michael T. (Juliette Rooney Varga) Rooney, Somerville, MA and David P. (Lani) Rooney, Ballston Lake; his grandchildren, Stephani (David) Sumner and Caleb, Jordan, and Nathaniel Rooney; his great grandchildren, Maggie and Hughie Sumner; a brother, John T. (Mary Ellen) Rooney, Anaheim Hills, CA; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Rooney and Sylvia Rooney, a brother-in-law, Ronald Wagar; a good friend, John Connolly and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, George M. Rooney, Nancy A. Sullo and Joseph F. Rooney, Jr.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Thursday, October 16, 2025 from 4-7 PM.
Funeral service will be held Friday, October 17, 2025 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Eagle Mills Cemetery Eagle Mills.
