Troy - Stephen J. Johnson, Jr. of Troy passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20 at Samaritan Hospital. A life-long Troy resident, he was born in 1941 to Stephen and Anna (Dougherty Dumbleton) Johnson. He graduated from La Salle Institute and College of the Holy Cross. He married his beloved wife, Janet, in 1964 and they spent many happy years in Troy raising their family. Steve taught at CBA in Albany from 1963 to 1966, before starting a long career with New York State including many years at the Office of Mental Health and the Capital District Psychiatric Center. In his retirement, he worked at O’Connor’s Church Goods in Latham, where he made many friends.
He was a member and Director of the Society of the Friends of St. Patrick, a communicant of Sacred Heart Church where he was a President of the Parish Council, a Eucharistic Minister, and lector. He was on the Board of Directors for Hope 7 and loved reading The New York Times.
He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Hemker and her husband Karl of Niskayuna, and his brother William Dumbleton of Chicago. Also predeceased by brothers-in-law Joseph Kelley and Dermot McCarthy and daughter-in-law Anita Johnson.
He is survived by Janet, his three sons Stephen (Anne) of Delmar, Daniel (Kalee) of Henrietta, NY, and Kevin (Janette) of Castro Valley, CA. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Lila, Luke, Hank, and Sadie Johnson.
Also left with decades of memories are in-laws Susanne Dumbleton of Chicago; Donna Kelley of Brewster, MA; Carrie McCarthy of County Cork, Ireland; Daniel and Linda Kelley of Wynantskill; Tricia and Stephen McCarthy of County Cork, Ireland; Mary and Robert Edwards of Stockbridge, MA; and James and Nancy Kelley of Troy. Further survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his kindness, smile and infectious laugh. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Stephen J. Johnson, Jr. to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Sort 8400 New York, NY 10131.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy on Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 4-6 pm.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 25, 2023 at 9:30 am at the funeral home and at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev.
