Sandra Young Stevens Obituary

West Sand Lake - Sandra Ann Shaver Young Stevens, 81, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, after several years of declining health.

Born in Troy on January 11, 1940, she was daughter of the late Quentin E. Shaver and Doris Gardner Shaver and widow of the late Forrest Stevens. She had resided in the West Sand Lake area most of her life and was a 1958 graduate of Averill Park High School.

When her children were young, Sandy was involved with the Averill Park High School Summer Stock productions held annually, creating and sewing elaborate costumes for the various musicals, costumes which endured until her daughters performed in the APHS musicals. Sandy was very active in Rensselaer County politics, due in large
part to her first husband, Roger’s, tenure as the Town Chairman of the Sand Lake Republicans.

She was a secretary, working for Senator Walter Langley, the associate counsel for Majority Leader Warren Anderson, and ultimately as the legislative aide for Senator Joseph L. Bruno. She was a legal secretary for the Walter Breakell and Leonard Krouner law firms in Albany before retiring to Florida where she earned her real estate licensure and embarked on a new career.

She was a member of the Fort Crailo Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of Salem United Methodist Church in West Sand Lake.

Survivors include her children, Doriann (William) Salisbury of Averill Park, Suzann (Barry) Gaines of St. Augustine, FL, David (Kristie) Young of Weedsport, and Samantha (Tim) Alberti of Cape Coral, FL; her siblings, Nancy Ware, Helen (late Fred) Rescott and Blaine E. (Patricia) Shaver; her grandchildren, Jason (Caroline) Salisbury (Morris Plains, NJ) and Quentin and Justine Young (Syracuse, NY); her great granddaughter, Charlotte Salisbury, to whom she was devoted and adored, several nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins. She was predeceased by her sister and best friend, Quinette (Andrew)  Dructor. In addition to Quinette, she was predeceased by her in-laws, John and Hilda Weekley Young, her former husband, Roger Young, and her favorite brother in law, John Michael (Joan) Young.
