West Sand Lake - Ronald I. Richards, 93, died Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late Irving Richards and Alice Watts Richards and husband of 72 years of the late Lois M. MacMillen Richards who passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2025. Ronald grew up in Troy, but made West Sand Lake his home where he and Lois lived for over 65 years.
Ronald was a proud Army veteran who served during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he returned to marry Lois and start a family.
Ronald started his career with Western Electric in Albany, (later known as AT&T and now Verizon) and remained there over 30 years, until his retirement. Ronald was active with CWA Local 1191, and served as President for a period of time.
Ronald was a former President of Twin Town Little League and helped establish the fields on Williams Road. He was always an active fan at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was also a member of the American Legion in Wynantskill. Ronald had fond memories of the time he spent with the “Old Goats” at Mahr’s Place many years ago in Troy.
Ronald was a skilled craftsman and during his retirement he enjoyed buying and renovating old homes in Troy.
Survivors include his children, Martin A. Richards, Defreestville, Paul D. (Toni) Richards, North Carolina, David R. (Debbie) Richards, Delanson, Stacey Richards, West Sand Lake, Leslie A. (Carmelo) Ortiz, Poestenkill, and Amy L. Richards, West Sand Lake. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Mark W. Richards, and his brother, Robert Richards.
Ronald had a special bond with his three youngest grandchildren: Kendra of West Sand Lake, Derek of Los Angeles, and Alexandra of New York City.
All services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in New Rural Cemetery in Rensselaer.
