Troy - Paul Franklin Bishop, 88, passed away on Tuesday May 23, 2023 surrounded by his loving family while vacationing in the North Carolina Outer Banks. We think he had a master plan to say goodbye while seeing the ocean and knowing that people he loves would be with him and together in a place for peace and healing. Paul has been our rock, providing our family the strength we need to carry on.
Paul was born in Asheville NC, joined the US army, and came to Troy, NY to build his life and family. Paul’s greatest joy was being a father and husband. He loved fiercely and held us together with the strength of that love. The outpouring of love from people who have known Paul has been such a support to his family. Paul’s impact, resulting from his big heart, loyal friendships, and one of a kind personality, has been felt by many.
Paul is survived by his wife Kate and his two sons David and Jacob (Brooke), his nieces Twila (Kenny) Harrison, Anita Gambrell, Rosebud and Davita Bishop. He enjoyed special relationships with his brother in law Michael (Sharon) McCormick and niece Michele and cousins Mark Kearney and Diane Simpson. He is also survived by many cousins, great nieces and nephews. Paul was blessed to be loved by so many people in so many different circles. Beloved as a teacher, bartender, coach, friend, mentor, musician, athlete, and so much more.
Paul had a distinguished career in Athletics at Hudson Valley Community College where he worked as a coach and intramural director. He started the women's Basketball and Volleyball teams in the 70’s, and coached the first National Championship women's basketball team for the college in 1993. Paul was inducted into the HVCC and National Junior College Athletic Association hall of fame. To this day the coach of the year award is named in his honor.
Paul was also a well known fixture in downtown Troy, working for many years as a bartender in several local establishments including the Rolls Touring Company. He was known to share the gift of his voice in renditions of Summertime and Old Man River on occasion. The Rolls offered a community that brought music and lasting friendships into our lives.
