Poestenkill - Nancy J.(Soule) Brown went home to be with our Lord at the age of 99 at The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls on January 25, 2025.
Nancy was born in Rensselaer, NY on Oct. 14, 1925 to the late Walter D. Soule and the late Marjorie R. Soule.
In 1946 she married Robert W. Brown and was married 67 years, until his passing in 2013. She lived in Poestenkill for over 70 years. She was a 1944 graduate of Troy High School.
As a young woman, she was employed as a telephone operator by NY Telephone Co. and was on the switchboard the day WWII ended. Other employments included the Troy YMCA and the Poestenkill Elementary School.
Her life was most defined by her love of nature which she passed down to her family and many other children. She could be found wandering the fields with her dog, on fly fishing streams, or backpacking the Adirondacks with her husband. Leading nature walks and encouraging bird study earned her the name of “the bird lady” by many children and adults.
In addition, she volunteered at the Poestenkill Library and had a keen interest in genealogy, assisting in the publication of the book entitled “Marcus Peck, Letters of a Civil War Soldier and His Family”. Nancy was Peck’s great grand-niece, and she donated his letters and Civil War memorabilia to the Rensselaer County Historical Society.
She and her husband were avid antique collectors and had an antique shop for many years.
She most recently was an active member and Sunday School teacher at Church of the Covenant and a past member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Troy.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda A. (Brown) Bulson, her son-in-law, Richard W. Bulson, her three grandchildren, David R. Bulson (Michelle) of Telluride, CO, Jennifer L. Bulson of Lancaster, NH, and Sarah J. Bulson of Rindge, NH., 9 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Sheila A. Campbell. She is predeceased by a sister, Joan A. Campbell.
Private funeral service and Oakwood Cemetery burial will be at the convenience of the family.
