Troy - Michael Robert Honan, 77, died Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Robert J. Honan and Virginia Labrum Honan and husband for 20 years of Gretchen P. Honan. Michael was raised in Troy and Melrose, but spent some time in Hurley, Albany, and Guilderland, NY, before moving back to the Troy area where he has resided for the past 24 years.
Michael attended Boston College before enlisting in the US Navy. Michael was stationed in the Philippines, while he proudly served his country during the Vietnam war, as a language expert. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to the Capital District to attend Hudson Valley Community College before earning a Bachelor’s degree in education from the College of St. Rose and a Master of Arts degree from SUNY Albany.
Michael was a website developer and designer for the Office of the Professions in the New York State Department of Education. Prior to that he was an art educator.
Michael was an artist who loved painting, photography, poetry and reading. He enjoyed time outside gardening and tending his lawn; in younger years, he played golf frequently. He loved watching golf and baseball on TV, accompanied by his favorite pipe and a tall glass of iced coffee. No family gathering was complete without cheesecake.
