Master Sgt. James A. Schaeffer

North Greenbush - Master Sergeant James A. Schaeffer, 78, died Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at St. Peter's Hospital Albany, in the arms of his loving wife surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Pine Grove, PA, he was son of the late Herbert Schaeffer and Ethel Rumberger and husband for 40 years of Patricia Geiger Schaeffer. He was raised in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Pine Grove Central High School.  He had resided in North Greenbush since 2017. 

James was a 21 year veteran and Master Sergeant in the US Army serving 2 tours in Vietnam and stationed in Germany.  His last active duty assignment was as a Military Instructor at LaSalle Institute in Troy, NY.  After his active service, he was the ROTC Instructor at Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie for 19 years.  He then worked for 10 years at Albany RV as a RV Demonstration Technician.  

He was a member of the American Legion Post #1489 Wynantskill, a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church and a volunteer at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany and Doors of Hope in West Sand Lake.    

Survivors in addition to his wife Patricia, include his children, Stacy, Tamara and James Jr.  Schaeffer, Susan Kane, Deborah Backus, Robert Husband; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Schaeffer; a son-in-law, Patrick Pierce; his grandchildren, Jamie (Shawn Fleming) Turner, Katelyn (Kristopher) Monforte, Erin Job, Alyssa (Robert) Fisher, Brianna and Ciera Pierce, Rebecca and Nichole Schaeffer and Emily and Louis Husband; his great grandchildren, Landon Fleming, Peyton Lee and Krossifixio Monforte and his brothers, Leonard Schaeffer and Rodney (Elaine) Schaeffer.  He was predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Schaeffer.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 4-7 PM.

Funeral service will be held Monday, April 11, 2022 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home and at 11 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church Wynantskill where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Patrick Rice, Pastor.

Entombment will be at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.
