TROY - Mary Agnes Rooney “Colleen” passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 15, 2025 at the Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy NY.
Born on June 28, 1929 in Troy NY, Colleen was the daughter of Edward L. Ryan and Agnes M. Ryan (Smith) of Troy. She was married 5/31/1952 to William R. Rooney at Sacred Heart Church in Troy until his passing 7/13/1984. A 1947 graduate of Catholic Central HS, she graduated in 1951 from Good Council College in White Plains (now Pace University).
A superb mom to her brood and the extended community, Colleen completed a 20+ year career as a patient representative at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Mom was a caregiver support volunteer for the Alzheimers Association and volunteer for many church and civic organizations.
She is survived by her sons William Ryan Rooney Jr (Susan) of Poestenkill, David M. Rooney (Kimberly) of Brunswick, Paul E. Rooney (Kristen) of Schenectady and Christopher J. Rooney (Mollie) of Glenville. Also survived by ten grandchildren: Caitlin E. Rooney (Ethan LeSage), Lillian E. Johnson, Megan M. Rooney (Sean Williams), Devon C. Rooney, William R. Rooney III, James P. Rooney (Aine Hardaker), Liam M. Rooney, Daniel C. Rooney (Kaitlyn), Clare E. Rooney and Caroline T. Rooney and several nieces and nephews. Colleen was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brother John E. Ryan and sister in law Mary Kay Ryan of Defreestville.
Colleen was a 35 year devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy. A legendary grandmother, believer in the good of all and patron of the arts, Colleen loved a good musical, but not too loud. A passionate Democrat, she was a world traveler with her dear friends Toddy and Joan Ryan and scores of others. An infectious laugher, she could best be described as a sketchy cook and baker of slightly underdone brownies. She enjoyed a glass of wine (the third pressing no doubt) and spirited conversation. A semi-respectable gardener, Colleen liked good food, just not the making of it. Proudly American with an Irish bent, Mom was most importantly a devout lover of God, family and the common good.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Sunday, July 20, 2025 from 4-7 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11AM at Our Lady of Victory Church 55 North Lake Avenue Troy.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.
