Mary T. (Courtney) Straub Van Wie

East Greenbush - Mary Straub Van Wie (maiden name Courtney) passed away peacefully of natural causes at Rosewood Nursing Home on September 27, 2021. 

Mary, affectionately referred to as Corkey by her school mates, and Maude by her sons in law and many of her children’s friends, was a devoted mother and grandmother. Mary graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1946. She resided in Troy most of her life, then moved to Wynantskill. Her last several years were spent at Rosewood Nursing Home. Having grown up an only child of a single parent, she was very proud of the legacy she leaves behind.

Upon graduating from CCHS, she worked at Cluett, Peabody & Company.  Mary was always helping other people. She was also a Foster Grandparent at Carroll Hill Elementary School in Troy for over 20 years and at St. Jude’s School for several years. She told many people that she wanted to be known for her love of children.

Mary is predeceased by her husband, Walter (Bud) Van Wie, her son Charles ‘Bill’ Straub (Theresa Jubic-Straub), and her daughter Mary Ellen Dennis. She is survived by three children: Noreen (Frank) O’Neil, Kathleen (Charles) Miorin, and Tina (Phil) Daigle. Mary’s legacy includes 8 grandchildren: Michele (Jose) Malave and Michael Tracey; Francis O’Neil, Carey (Chris) Gentile, and Matthew (Kate) O’Neil; and Joshua, Angela, and Nicole Daigle. She also had 8 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed but we find comfort knowing she is at peace. A sincere thank you to those at Rosewood that loved her, comforted her, and prayed with her. Mary will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Thursday, September 30th. Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of Mary’s life Thursday from 3-7PM at Moscatiello’s Italian Restaurant, 99 North Greenbush Road, Troy.
