Brunswick - Martha Ellen Walsh, 88, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on August 13, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Troy, NY on July 15, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Walsh, Esq. and Edna Molloy Walsh. She was a graduate of Emma Willard School in 1954 and Syracuse University earning a BA in 1958.
Martha was a full time Mom, Realtor but her last, and perhaps most beloved job was as a Case Manager for adults living in the community through The Arc of Rensselaer County who she cared for and loved like her own children.
Her volunteer work included as one of the first volunteers at Unity Sunshine (on 8th Street) with the late and former Sr. Mary Jane Smith, Pinewoods Center, an Usher at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, a Board member for Rensselaer County Historical Society (now Hart Cluett Museum), Rensselaer County Council for the Arts (RCCA), now Arts Center of the Capital Region (ACCR), Junior Museum (later Children’s Museum of Science and Technology), Troy City School District Board of Education, AIDS Care Team member, Damien Center (Troy), PTA (School 16), Homeroom mother and Girl Scout Leader.
Martha traveled the world extensively with family members and dear friends and remained active with art, tennis, skiing, biking, golf, Bridge player, enjoyed regional theater and music and loved to read.
Family was most important to Mom/Mimi and she had a special relationship with each of us.
Survivors include her children, Joseph R. Champagne, CAPT USN RC (retired) (Susan), Hon. Elizabeth M. Walsh (Hon. Christopher T. Maier), Mark P. Walsh (Anne Bair), Daniel W. Champagne (Susan, RN) and Christopher R. Walsh, DDS (Jennifer); Mimi’s grandchildren, Brennan and Neal Champagne (Alice Tang) (Joe’s children), Katelynn, MD (Nikki Ortiz, MD) and Nancy Champagne (Dan’s children), Thomas and Eric Maier (Beth’s children), Isabella and Christian Walsh (Chris’ children) and Dagny Walsh (Mark’s child). Also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Joseph B. Walsh, MD (Don W. Lundquist); her sister, Elizabeth Walsh, and her former spouse, Joseph S. Champagne, PE.
Our Family extends our deepest thanks to the Palliative Care providers, Dr. Sulzman, PA Locasano and staff at Troy Internal Medicine, Drs. Luyun, Weinhold, Savage and Marshall of St. Peter’s Health Partners for their compassionate and expert care during Mom’s illness. We would also like to thank Mimi’s Angels who have lovingly cared for Mom at home during the past year: Mimi (2), Katharine, Akilah, Katie, Wayka, Anita, Sareta, Jackie, Melissa, Steffane, Cindy, Hiciona, Maggie and Shaquillah. You are a part of our family now. Finally, we would like to thank Community Hospice - especially Nurse Jake and the other caregivers who made Mom’s last several weeks comfortable and who provided great support for Mom and our family.
As a last act of generosity, Mom donated her body to Albany Medical College.
