West Sand Lake - Madison Duane Wehnau, 95, of Reichard Lake Road died Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Rosewood Gardens after a brief illness.
Born in Sand Lake, he was son of the late Madison Wehnau and Myra Holdridge Wehnau and husband of the late Marjorie F. Ott Wehnau. He had resided in the West Sand Lake area all his life and was a graduate of Averill Park High School.
Duane was a rural letter carrier for 35 years delivering to the RD#1 Averill Park area and the West Sand Lake areas. Previously he did odd jobs in the area for several years.
He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in West Sand Lake where he was a Trustee and held several other offices. He was the last active, charter member of the Lt. Perry Williams VFW Post #3025 in which he was a member since 1946 and a Past Commander, a 50 year member of the American Legion, Sampson WWII Vets and a member of the National, State and County Rural Letter Carrier Associations He served in the US Navy in New Caladonia and Guam and was discharged as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2C.
Survivors include three sons, Edwin D. Wehnau, TX, Victor F. (Lynn) Wehnau, Corinth and Rodney J. (Debra) Wehnau, Penn Yan; a daughter, Carol (Jeffrey) Jacon, Poestenkill, a brother, Ralph Wehnau, Voorhees Township, NJ; seven grandchildren, Stefan D. Wehnau, Valerie Marshall, Michael D. Wehnau, Heather Federlein, Lisa Lake and Thomas and Daniel Jacon; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Paul L., Walter F. and Norman C. Wehnau and a sister, Dora Wehnau.
Relatives and friends may call at the Salem United Methodist Church Shaver Road West Sand Lake on Saturday from 1-3PM with a funeral service at 3PM. Face covering and social distancing are required at all times both outside and inside during visitation and services.
Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery West Sand Lake.
