Madelon "Lonnie" McManus Obituary

Troy, NY – Madelon E. “Lonnie” McManus, 79, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, after a brief illness. She was the loving mother of John P. McManus III of Troy and Bridget McManus (Daniel J. Byrnes) of Voorheesville, NY.

Survivors in addition include her siblings: Victor (Kristen) DeMouth, Melanie DeMouth Ball, and James DeMouth, and also cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, as well as friends she loved like family. She was predeceased by her sister Suzanne Waltz and her brother Thomas DeMouth.

Born in Warwick, NY to her parents, Victor E. DeMouth and Madelon E. (Bauer) DeMouth, Lonnie liked to share fond memories of her early childhood there. Later, her family moved to Albany, NY where she graduated from Vincentian Institute High school. After that, she worked hard and spent leisure time with friends, eventually married and later raised her children in the Beman Park Neighborhood of Troy, NY. She resided in that same home for over 50 years until a recent injury required a move to the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center for specialized care.

She loved nature and animals of all shapes and sizes and enjoyed feeding wild birds and squirrels. She taught her children how to care for pet dogs, cats, birds and fish. She was a member of the Troy Riding club in Wynantskill, NY and was an accomplished equestrian. She competed at the St. Jude Horse Show, Schaghticoke Horse Show, other local gymkhanas and enjoyed casual trail riding.

Lonnie touched the lives of co-workers at several places over the years: NYS DEC, Worthington Flowers, Southworth-Milton/Caterpillar, the NYS Dept. of Health and Shaker Animal Hospital. She was an Operations Associate at the RPI Graduate Admissions Office when she retired in 2018. She also had a creative side that included gardening, drawing, pottery, painting with watercolors, oils and acrylics. She completed a novel while working full-time and participated in peer review sessions with fellow authors. She went to writers’ group conferences, enjoyed attending book club meetings and swapping books with friends and family. Reading was one of her greatest pleasures.
