Troy, NY - Francis Redmond "Reddy" Griffin, 90, died Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late William Jeremiah Griffin and Anna Mae Walsh Griffin and husband for 56 years to the love of his life Deborah Ann Burns Griffin. Even though Red was born in Watervliet and currently resided in Wynantskill, he spent most of his life living and working in Troy, where he was the "Mayor" and knew everyone on the street and loved to lend a helping hand. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green University and in 1960 he received his Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School.
Red was a partner in Pattison, Sampson, Ginsburg & Griffin until his retirement in January of 2023 after 60+ years of practicing law. In 2015, Reddy received the Jones Award from his peers for his dedication and service to both his profession and community. He served as Assistant Counsel to the Speaker of the New York State Assembly from 1969 to 1970. He was Counsel to the Troy Housing Authority and a member of the Rensselaer County Sewer Agency. He was also Special Counsel for the Town of East Greenbush Water and Sewer District. His areas of practice include Real Estate Law, Zoning and Planning, Community Development, Commercial Mortgage Lending, and Lobbying. Red had a long-standing relationship with RPI.
Red was a director of the Rensselaer County Red Cross and was a trustee of the YWCA of Troy-Cohoes, serving, in addition, as Chairman of the YWCA Board for 6 years. Red enjoyed golf and playing cards with the guys, but his dedication and love for his family always came first. Reddy was happiest sitting at the dinner table (for hours) with Debbie, surrounded by his kids and grandchildren. Throughout the day, you would find him sitting in the sun reading a thick history book with a small glass Pepsi nearby. Even though he grew up in NY, Reddy loved rooting for the Red Sox with his girls, to the chagrin of his son. Dad, we will take care of the leaves for you.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Deborah, include his 3 children, Faith (Michael) Stevens, East Falmouth, MA, Christopher W. (Jessica) Griffin, Bonita Springs, FL and Victoria (Timothy) Cawley, Manchester, MA; his sister, Honor (Hillard) Huntington, Menlo Park, CA; and his beloved grandchildren, Taylor Francis, Samantha Ann, Shane Michael, Jackson Timothy, and Caroline Wilhelmina
A celebration of life (Reddy Day) will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Francis Redmond Griffin to the Troy Public Library, 100 Second Street, Troy, New York 12180.
