North Greenbush - Francis James "Frank" Giuliano, Sr., a cherished pillar of his community and a beacon of kindness, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023, at his home in North Greenbush, NY. Born on May 6, 1928, in Troy, NY, Frank's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his work, and his service to others.
Frank's life was a testament to the power of love and commitment. He was a devoted husband to Shirley Sowalsky Giuliano for an incredible 73 years, and together they built a family that became his pride and joy. He is survived by their loving children, Shirley (Curt) Miller Ruhtz, Susan (Rick) VanZandt, Kevin (Julie) Giuliano, Steven (Lori) Giuliano, and Marc (Chelsea) Giuliano. Frank was a guiding light to his 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love. His sister, Elizabeth Cerqua; brother, Salvatore Giuliano; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. The Giuliano family tree, including several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, stands as a living monument to Frank's loving influence. He was predeceased by his son, Francis J. Giuliano, Jr.; grandson, Anthony Giuliano; and sister, Theresa Inco.
Frank's work ethic was legendary. His career spanned over 40 years with the Town of North Greenbush, where he was known for his unwavering dedication and leadership as the Highway Superintendent from 1984 to 1992. His years of service began at J.H. Maloy in construction, and even after retirement, he continued to serve his community as the Town Hall custodian until March 2023, when he retired at the remarkable age of 94.
A veteran of World War II, Frank served his country with honor and pride. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career and into his community, where he was a beloved figure. For over 70 years, Frank was an active member of the Wynantskill Fire Department, where he held many roles including Past President, Fire Police, and Fire Commissioner. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and as a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Wynantskill, he served as an usher for more than seven decades.
Frank's joyous spirit found a special outlet as he played Santa Claus for over 50 years, bringing smiles and joy to countless individuals at the Wynantskill Fire Department, Van Rensselaer Manor, Kiwanis Club of Wynantskill, and many other venues. His involvement in various associations was extensive, including the American Legion Post #1489, VFW Post 7466, Knights of Columbus Council 12637, Hendrick Hudson Rod & Gun Club, Rensselaer County Highway Superintendents, The International Union of Operating Engineers, and Upstate NY Engineers.
Those who knew Frank will remember him for his loving nature, his kindness, and his friendly demeanor. He was a man who made friends easily and kept them for life. His compassionate spirit and generous heart left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
As we bid farewell to Francis James "Frank" Giuliano, Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, service, and the joy of giving. His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.
