Wynantskill — Eva Varady, 101, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at her residence, following a long illness.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Eva was the daughter of the late Attila Varady and Marta Szendey Varady. In 1951, she immigrated to the United States with her two children, Sylvia and Edward, beginning a new chapter of life filled with determination and resilience. The following year, she welcomed her third child, Andrew, in the Albany area.
Eva was known for her extraordinary work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. Over the years, she worked as a waitress, hostess, manager, and owner, excelling in every role she undertook. She owned and operated Eva’s Towpath Inn, a popular nightclub in Menands, known for its lively atmosphere, renowned bands, and authentic Hungarian cuisine. After the establishment was lost to a fire, Eva continued her career in hospitality by taking over the Vittles & Grog Restaurant in Loudonville and later managing a Howard Johnson’s for several years.
Her true passion emerged when she became an Independent Beauty Consultant and Executive Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Eva inspired and mentored many, building a large and successful sales team. Remarkably, she continued selling Mary Kay products until recently, a testament to her dedication and love for connecting with others.
Deeply connected to her heritage, Eva served as president of the Hungarian Benevolent Society in Schenectady, NY, and was highly active in the German Club. She was known for hosting memorable gatherings, especially at the Excelsior House, where family and friends came together to celebrate. Eva also contributed to the Albany area’s Festival of Nations, supporting Hungarian dancers and cultural traditions.
Eva lived life with enthusiasm and energy. In her youth along the Danube, she enjoyed kayaking and river running. She was an accomplished acrobatic dancer, a skier who traveled the world to renowned resorts, a basketball player, and an avid swimmer who spent many cherished days at Snyder’s Lake. Alongside her beloved companion, George, she traveled extensively, embracing cultures, cuisine, and experiences across the globe. Whether hosting dinners, dancing, or playing ping-pong, Eva brought joy and vitality to every moment.
She is survived by her children, Edward Schindele, Sylvia (Anthony) Viccarone, and Andrew (Elke) Malura; her sister, Marta Singleton; as well as her grandchildren, Stephen and Erika and great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving companion, George R. Harris III.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, April 13, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy, with a service to follow at 12:30 p.m., officiated by Rev. Judy Converse.
Interment will follow in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
