Ellen Hancock Obituary

Fort Plain - We said goodbye to our beloved Ellen Margaret Hancock in the early hours of November 20th, 2023. She was surrounded by her children and husband, enveloped in love.

Ellen was born to Julia and Jesse Shively in Newburgh, NY on January 5th, 1949. She graduated from Mount St Mary High School and earned a degree in English (creative writing) from William Smith College. She received her Master’s Degree in Library Science with a focus on Children’s Literature from SUNY Geneseo.  In later years, Ellen shared her time between her farm in Fort Plain, NY and a cabin in Manchester, VT.

Ellen is survived by her childhood friend and husband of 51 years, Robert Hancock; her children, Elizabeth Hancock, Jesse Hancock and Emma (Nicholas) Wild; sister, Janet Shively; brother, John Shively; two granddaughters, Evangeline Compton and Elle Wild; four nieces, and great nieces and nephews. She also left behind her beloved dog, Frankie. She was predeceased by her parents and her nephew, Captain Jonathan Shively (Gold Star).

Ellen retained a sense of wonder and curiosity throughout her life. She was always in touch with the magic of childhood, and hers was a most wonderful hand to grow up holding. She adored the natural world and found beauty and mystery all around her. She took deep pleasure in immersing herself in her surroundings. She was a brilliant collector of unexpected treasures with a reverence for the way certain objects can resonate with beauty, history and meaning. Ellen was a true poet-in a literal sense and also in the ways she connected with the world. She found adventure everywhere, from the gardens and fields on her farm, to the beaches of Nova Scotia and the deserts of Australia.

Ellen lived and died without fear. She loved her family fiercely and with great tenderness. We are deeply grieving the loss of our beautiful Ellen, but the memory of her gentle spirit and the profound imprint of her life remain.

A celebration of Ellen’s life will be held December 2, 2023 at 1PM at the family farm.  We recommend using the brycefuneralhome.com website to share or send condolences, light a candle or view the video.
