North Greenbush - Edward Michael Milhizer, 81, formerly of Brunswick, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Van Rensselaer Manor, after living courageously with the effects of a stroke for many years and facing a year-long battle with cancer. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ed was a quiet, kind soul who was deeply devoted to his children and those fortunate enough to know him.
Born in Troy on December 26, 1944, he was the son of the late Elmer and Helen Milhizer. A lifelong resident of Troy, Ed grew up in the Albia neighborhood and later resided in Brunswick. He was a graduate of Troy High School and Hudson Valley Community College.
Ed spent his career with the New York State Education Department, where he worked for many years producing Regents Examinations. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
A devoted and loyal member of the American Legion Post in Wynantskill, Ed served in many roles over the years, including Commander, bar and beverage manager, and bartender, In his younger years, he was also a private pilot. He enjoyed music—especially rock—and took great pride in listening to his brother Bill play the drums. Above all, Ed found joy in life’s simple pleasures: quiet moments, familiar routines, and the company of family and friends.
Survivors include his son, William Ryan (Paige) Milhizer of Castleton; his daughter, Sara (Edward) Donnelly of Schodack; and his four cherished grandchildren, Ava and Aiden Donnelly, and Benjamin and Claire Milhizer. He is also survived by his brothers, William Robert Milhizer of Troy and Robert (Paula) Milhizer of Chicago; and his nephews, Robert and Patrick Milhizer.
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 from 4-7 PM.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 10 AM at the funeral home and at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. John Yanas, Pastor.
Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.
