Duncan Thomas Stewart

Averill Park - It is with so much love and so many amazing memories that the family of Duncan Thomas Stewart of Averill Park, NY announces his peaceful passing at home with family by his side on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at the age of 73. 

The oldest of three boys, Duncan was raised in Boston and Brookline, MA and had fond memories of the summers he spent as a child and young man on the family farm in Stephentown, NY.

Husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, coach, project manager, carpenter, mentor, and friend were all roles that Duncan was proud to hold - not for himself, but for those he worked with, connected with, led, followed, and loved.

A skilled carpenter and respected project manager, he spent his life building things that would stand the test of time. Whether working with his hands, leading a team, or tackling a difficult project, he approached every task with dedication, character, and selflessness. Around the Capitol Region there are numerous projects that Duncan managed including historical restorations, school upgrades, and church renovations. In 2024 he retired as the Executive Director of the Albany Convention Center Authority where he oversaw the project and, with his team and the ACCA Board, brought the Albany Capital Center from concept to reality.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a volunteer coach, mentor, and trusted friend to many. He generously shared his knowledge, encouraged others, and led by example. He influenced the lives of countless people with his patience, warmth, guidance, and unwavering support.

A dedicated servant leader, Duncan spent many volunteer hours giving back to the community, making lasting impacts and leaving things better than he found them. Although not a veteran himself, he admired the dedication of the Tri-County Council Vietnam Era Veterans of Albany, NY and was grateful for the friends he gained through volunteering together. In retirement, he found camaraderie and new friendships while volunteering on the Sawyer and Special Projects Crews of the Hudson Taconic Lands. Their approach of conservation through community resonated with his love for the outdoors and forever wild lands. 

His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the values he instilled, the projects he completed, the stories he told, and the friends and family who were fortunate to know and love him.

Duncan worked hard to accomplish what he did in his lifetime and his proudest accomplishment was his family. He passed away on Father’s Day, the role he truly cherished. In life we always wish for one more and while we wish there were endless more good times, more laughs, more hugs, and more special handshakes with Duncan/Dad/PopPop we are forever grateful for all that we have shared and the amazing person he was. Love forever and always. 

Duncan is survived by his wife of 42 years Stephanie Connors Stewart, his daughter Michaela Stewart Moody, her husband Dr. Dave Moody and their children Lillian and Willow, his son LtCol Conor Stewart (USMC) and his wife Lindsay Stewart, his daughter Gillian Stewart, and his brother Caleb Stewart and his husband Richard Snow. Also survived by beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Duncan was predeceased in death by his parents William Stewart and Patricia Stewart and his brother Nathaniel Stewart.

Calling hours will be June 26, 2026 from 5:30-8pm at Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276  Pawling Ave in Troy, NY.

A Celebration of Life will be held  at a later date to be determined.
