Troy - Doris M. Horton Rafferty, 95, a lifelong resident of Troy, passed away on Saturday, July 24 at the Rosewood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Born on November 18, 1925 to parents John K. and Laura Melville Horton, she was the last surviving of the Horton’s 10 children.
At 10 years old, Doris was hailed as heroic by local newspapers after an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the drowning deaths of her younger sisters, Lois and Jane, after all three fell through the ice of the Wynantskill Creek.
Later in life, she graduated from Catholic Central High School before holding a variety of jobs that included telephone operator for New York Telephone, clerk at Montgomery Wards, and secretary at the New York State Department of Labor for over 20 years.
She was married to George H. Rafferty for 65 years before his death in November of 2010. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she attended church at Sacred Heart, St. William’s, and the Transfiguration Parish.
Rafferty is survived by son George G. Rafferty (Kim); grandchildren Glenn Babineau, Casey Rafferty (Beth), Shannon Rafferty, Jaclyn Scott, Travis Scott; and great grandchildren Natalie Rafferty, Calvin Rafferty, Audrey Rafferty, Kiersten Sisco, Destiny Wierzbicki, and Myah Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings (Laura, Grace, Mildred, Jack, Delbert, Jean, Jane, Lois, Nancy), and daughters, Colleen LaFountaine and Nancy Carol Rafferty (died shortly after birth).
Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 4-7PM.
Funeral service will be held Friday, July 30, 2021 at 10AM at the funeral home and at 10:30AM at Sacred Heart Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. John Yanas, Pastor. Face covering and social distancing are required if not vaccinated.
Interment will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Schuylerville.
