Claudia Schwendeman Obituary

Brunswick - Claudia Lee Schwendeman passed away peacefully at her home on December 26, 2023, surrounded by her family.  She lived a happy and active life, but succumbed to complications of a brain tumor which was first diagnosed nearly 30 years ago.

Claudia was born on November 24, 1957, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Margaret and E. Kent Esbaugh, but she spent most of her early years with her parents and three sisters at their home in Marshall, MI.  She graduated valedictorian of Marshall High School in 1975, and then moved to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan.  As a third-year undergraduate student, Claudia received early acceptance into the U. of M. School of Dentistry, and she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1982.  It was at the U. of M. where she met Donald Schwendeman, and they were married later in July, 1982.  The couple moved to Pasadena, CA, where Don was a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology and Claudia worked as an associate dentist in Beverly Hills and Pasadena.  During their time together in California, Claudia and Don enjoyed hiking, biking, and camping, and they shared a love of long walks at the beach.  Their first son, Andrew, was born in July, 1987, and they moved to Troy, NY, one month later.  Claudia put her career in dentistry on hold to be a stay-at-home mom, while Don took a faculty position at RPI.  Their second son, Michael, was born in June, 1989.  Throughout these early years in Troy, Claudia volunteered her time at the kids’ schools and at the First United Presbyterian Church in Troy where she was a longtime member.  Claudia resumed her career in dentistry in 1998 first as an associate dentist before starting her own dental practice on Hoosick Street in Troy in 2000.  Since then and until her retirement in 2021, Claudia worked with excellent office staff and dental colleagues, and she was honored to provide dental care for many wonderful patients.  She defied odds following her brain tumor diagnosis and led an active and full life, enjoying running, golf, and vacations at her family cottage in northern Michigan and other destinations around the US and abroad.  Claudia attended graduations and weddings, and she had the joy of holding her four grandchildren.

Claudia is survived by her beloved husband Don, sons Andrew (Kaitlyn) and Michael (Anna), grandchildren (Leo, Jack, Nora, and George), mother Margaret and sisters Wendy (Bruce), Susan (Tim), and Kimberly (Tom).
