Arnold Grinnell Obituary

Troy - Arnold D. Grinnell, 96, died Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Eddy Heritage House Nursing Center Troy after a long illness.

Born in Schenectady, he was son of the late James H. Grinnell Sr. and Ruth Enos Grinnell and husband of the late Mary M. Servis Grinnell. He was raised in Scotia and resided in Troy/Brunswick for many years. He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 and served as a cook for about a year and a half. After leaving the Navy, he earned a GED high school diploma to finish his education.

Arnold and his wife, Mary, were married at Sacred Heart Church, Troy on November 18, 1951. They were together for over 62 years until Mary's passing. Arnold was a devoted husband to Mary during her illness while she was in a nursing home for six years. In earlier years, together they enjoyed square dancing and studying the bible. In addition to his love of old cars, "Arnie" also enjoyed riding his Indian motorcycle with his brother Al when they were young. Family gatherings were among his favorite things to do.

Arnold was previously employed for several years by his friend Roland J. Down as an HVAC installer. For a time, he was part owner of a bakery/diner in Colonie and owned a home bakery business. Over the years, Arnold worked as a baker for Bella Napoli Bakery, Dunkin Donuts, Price Chopper Distribution Baking, Leonard and Memorial Hospitals, and more recently the Van Rensselaer Manor, retiring in 1990. His baked goods were enjoyed by many.

Besides his parents and wife, Arnold is predeceased by a son, Scott M. Grinnell; three brothers, James H. Grinnell Jr., Elmer Grinnell, and William Grinnell; two sisters, Ruth Fox and Mildred Givan.

Survivors include a son, David (Lori) Grinnell, Averill Park; a daughter, Lynne (Richard) Patton, Brunswick. Arnold is also survived by his six grandchildren: Robert (Michele) Patton, Maribeth (Timothy) Livingston, Tara (Aaron) Ondek, Christina (Michael) Cookingham,  Krystle (Jared) Niemela, and Daniel (Sonya Ward) Grinnell. His eleven great-grandchildren include: Alex, Emily and Aaron Livingston; Madeline Patton; Joshua, Cadence and Landon Cookingham, Freyja Ondek and Cora, Daphne, and Eliza Niemela. He was affectionately called "Poppy" by all. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, William (Mary) Servis, Troy; several nieces and nephews; and a family friend, Nancy Daby, Albany.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Center for the care given to Arnold during the past four years.
