Valarie J. Mason Traver, 77

Averill Park - Valarie J. Mason Traver, 77, of Eastern Union Turnpike died Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland after a long illness.

Born in Swampscott, MA, she was daughter of the late Raymond G. Mason and Verna Stevens Mason and wife of Robert W. Traver Sr. She had resided in Averill Park since 1972 and attended Melrose, MA High School.

Mrs. Traver was the Executive Director for the Red Cross in Rensselaer County for 4 years and a volunteer for many years. She also worked with her husband, Bob, who was a management consultant for manufacturing and improving product quality.

As a Red Cross volunteer, she worked in many capacities including teaching courses to local fire companies. She was a Navy veteran serving as a Naval Aviation Electronics Technician. She and her husband enjoyed stocking local streams with trout for many years. Valarie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and had participated in the Community in Cub Scouts and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors in addition to her husband include three sons, Steven B. (Charlotte) Harris, Briarcliff Manor, NY, Robert O. Harris, Plantation, FL and Maj. Kenneth G. (Sylvia) Harris, Boca Raton, FL; a daughter, Karen Leigh (John) Pudrum, VA; three stepchildren, Robert 'Rob' W. (Lesley) Traver Jr., Harvard, MA, Jeffrey M. Traver, King-of-Prussia, PA and Elizabeth J. Traver, Laramie, WY; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Miller, Melrose, MA and a brother, R. Gardner Mason, FL.

There will be a open house celebration of her life for friends and family to share photos and stories, Saturday, March 8th, 2014 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4363 New York 150, West Sand Lake. Any questions call, Charlotte Harris at 914-391-5331.
