[SHARING A MEMORY– To my Aunt Luella, Jennifer, and Tommy]
"KELLEY'S TOY"
No, this isn't about ‘Lego's or Tonka Trucks’ from the 80's – It's about my Uncle Tom, whom we will all miss; a hardworking man who truly loved his family, until the end! His daughter Jennifer, my cousin, said it well, "He never took a day off and was always working on a project." Whether, he was working on a home repair project, in his garage working on a vehicle, or working creatively with his hands (He was an amazing carpenter and enjoyed restoring old vehicles), he did it to benefit his family. As for me, I'll never forget his love for the water! I loved going camping with my Aunt Luella and Uncle Tom....and going on the lake in "Kelley's Toy"; their boat, was my absolute favorite! My Uncle Tom taught me how to water ski.
Dad's are cool, but an uncle that steps it up to share in your upbringing is even cooler! (It's no secret that my dad wasn't there for us, growing up - we were blessed with many uncles who stepped in) Uncle Tom never tried to take the place of my father. He was always there to help offer the best advice and listen! ‘OK!’ So, he'd have a wrench or socket in his hands, tightening a bolt....but, he was always listening! I can only hope that I'm as cool, loving, and compassionate of an Aunt, as he was an Uncle.
HE BELIEVED IN ME...even when I didn't! I still remember his lectures and frustration with me with not pursuing my artistic talents.(I have always been too modest and insecure with it)
One of my fondest memories (now) is of my uncle asking me to airbrush "Kelley's Toy" on the back of his boat. (I regret now, not ever doing it....I was more concerned about making a mistake and having it not turn out perfectly) Tonight, I'm left with these great memories of "Love!" In retrospect, he didn't care how perfect it turned out, he just wanted to encourage his niece....I'm truly humbled this evening, in this thought!
I wanted to share something very special – I'm a private person on some things – Not many people know this. When I was pregnant with my youngest son Isaiah, I asked Jack if we could name our son Isaiah Slavver after my Uncle Tom, because he was always there for us when we were young, getting on our feet. (Jack and I lived with my Aunt & Uncle for a short time) Of coarse, he agreed, hence why our son: ‘Isaiah (Thomas) Slaver’ was named after my uncle.....I'm so glad we did!
Much Love from your niece and cousin,
~Lynne Ellen
