Sherman W. 'Sherm' Sowalsky, 70

Troy - Sherman W. 'Sherm' Sowalsky, 70, of Smith Avenue died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late William Sowalsky and Irma Walsh Sowalsky, husband of the late Rose Marie Cangro Jones Sowalsky and beloved companion of Gloria Donovan of Troy. He had resided in Germany, El Paso, Texas, Ft. Drum, NJ, Kentucky and the past 35 years in Troy and attended Troy schools.

Sherm was a 22 year veteran of the US Army serving 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, being discharged as a Staff Sargent and was awarded the Purple Heart. He later worked for 22 years with the Department of the Aging in Rensselaer County with the Meals on Wheels Program, delivering, cooking and later as a Site Manager, retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the Aqua Vista Campers Association and was a life member of the VFW. He erected a military memorial at Aqua Vista and conducted a memorial service every Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. He also volunteered with Project Linus, making blankets for terminally ill children.

Survivors include his children, Linda R. (John Mero) Jones of Troy, David J. Jones of Troy, Sheila (Don) Pier of Cohoes, William (Ruth) Jones of Troy, Margaret Paul of Cohoes, Loretta Jones of Troy and Slade (Holly) Miller of Middlebury, VT; his siblings, Shirley (Francis) Giuliano of Wynantskill, Merry Dutcher of Delaware and Michael (Josephine) Sowalsky of Sanford, FL; a daughter-in-law , Fran Jones of Schenectady; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Alfred Jones III and a sister, Ann Murphy.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 9:00 AM at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7PM .

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.
