Rick Adams, 70

Troy - Rick Adams, 70, of Troy died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn in Albany after a short illness.

Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, he was son of the late Winslow and Elizabeth Adams. His beloved children Wendy and Scott Adams, and his brother Winslow H. Adams survive him.

Rick earned a Bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and a Master's in education from The College of St. Rose. Early in his career, he served for two years as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, and worked in the development offices at Union College and the Emma Willard School.

Rick's love of children and his desire to be of service to others led him to his ultimate profession as a teacher. He designed and co-taught the innovative alternative education program at the Doyle Middle School in Troy, and over 22 years, improved the lives of countless teenagers and their families.

He was a loving, one-of-a-kind, father, teacher, spiritual seeker, runner, dancer, skier, volunteer and friend. He ran five marathons, including Boston, and travelled in 40 countries on all seven continents. His favorite international destination was Bali, Indonesia, where he spent half his time since his retirement.

As a volunteer, he worked with Unity House, the Neighborhood Action Council of Troy, and at a Domestic Violence Shelter.

It is hard to know that Dad is gone from this physical plane. But there is relief in knowing that while he has left his body behind, he remains whole, vibrant and present in our hearts.

Calling hours will be held at Kellas Commons at Emma Willard School in Troy on Saturday, March 26th from 1:00 - 2:30pm. A service will follow at 2:30.
