Richard A. Johnson, age 78

Poestenkill - Richard A. Johnson, age 78 of Poestenkill died suddenly Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Richard was born in Queens, NY on December 8, 1933, the only son of the late Alfred Johnson and Anna Paulin Johnson. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and City College of New York receiving a BBA degree in Industrial Engineering.

During his tenure of state service, he held several positions as Director in various capacities, while working at the Division of Criminal Justice Services for 43 years. In that capacity as Director of Data Conversion, he developed, implemented, and administered the conversion of a half million manual records used as the data base for the first automated criminal Summary Case History system for New York State.

In addition to work, he became a neighborhood activist heading up the Algonquin Estates Neighborhood Association informing neighbors about issues relating to land and housing. He spent many years as a Girls' Junior Olympic softball coach winning many local, state and regional tournaments. He also participated as a volunteer assistant softball coach for the Averill Park High School varsity softball team for four years. Finally, he served on many local not for profit boards, such as Vice President of the Troy Boys and Girls Club, a member of the Hudson Mohawk Softball Board of Directors, United Way Allocation panelist, Chair of the United Way Agency campaign, among many others.

In his later years, he was an advocate for people less fortunate than himself, and tried to help others in need by sharing his gifts freely without reservation.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maureen Gleeson Johnson , his son, Richard Johnson, his daughter, Joanne DeVito and her husband, John DeVito, and grandchildren Nicholas, Michael and Christine DeVito. He is also survived by his dear cousin, Vivian DeVisser and other relatives.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Sunday from 4-7 PM.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 8:45 AM at the funeral home and at 9:30 AM at St. Henry's Church Averill Park where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. John Provost, Pastor.

Interment will be in St. Henry's Cemetery Averill Park.
