I attended Holy Cross Episcopal Church in the late 1970s, while I was a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. As the rector of that church, he provided me spiritual counseling based on his education in both psychology and Christianity. He gave me some useful perspectives on life; for example on how to resolve my former beliefs in astrology and how to love and have compassion on seemingly unimportant and misguided people. I then left RPI and his church with still unanswered questions. I then gradually received additional insights in the years afterwards, and it would have been interesting to have met up with him again decades later to fill him in on my later insights. He was a positive contributor in my spiritual journey.

My words will not be able to convey the extent of my meaningful relationship and work with Herbert as his therapy client. I am very thankful for the many gifts he shared with me during our time together - among them, hospitality, healing experiences, help for living well and wisdom for life decisions. His work with me is extended to others as I too work with therapy clients. Herbert was a Wonderful Counselor, a lovely man and clearly loved his family.

I met Father Sanderson through Cursillo. He always had a smile for us and the things that I learned musically from him were very valuable. I remember him saying "a song in your heart is worth 10 on the page". He will be missed. But we know he is at peace with our Lord and Savior.

I am so sorry to hear of Herb's passing and would like to express my condolences to his wonderful family. I came to know Herb through my work as a clinical psychologist and spent many enjoyable hours speaking with him about shared cases, theories, and other issues relevant to our work. I'll always remember his never-ending optimism and very keen sense of humor. He will be missed by all who had any degree of contact with him.

I am so blessed to have known Herbert and experience his Spiritual Direction for over 15 years. I first met Herbert at Cursillo around 2002, where he introduced himself as "My Spiritual Director." I don't think either of us knew that this prophetic statement would last well beyond the 4 day retreat and include Herbert preparing me for and preaching at my ordination to the Priesthood, and mentoring me in all areas of my life even through this very year - even as his Body was failing him, his mind and wisdom were piercing, convicting, and full of grace, truth, humor and his ever present signature sarcastic yet loving wit.

Herbert was "The Real Deal." A true Christian and a beautiful person. I will sorely miss him, but even as I grieve the loss of his earthly presence I hear his voice within me and feel his prayers encouraging me on. I am forever grateful to have been shaped by this Giant of man that showed me more than anyone who Jesus is. Until we meet again. Love you Herbert!

So sorry to hear of the passing of Father Sanderson. More than 35 years ago I attended the Church of the Holy Cross where he taught me the power of liturgy and music to point us to Christ. His joy in, and his love for God remain in me a lasting impression of the man and his work. When he wasn't teaching me church history he was teaching me Educational Psychology and history at RSC.
