Philip Storrs Pierce, 88

West Sand Lake- Philip Storrs Pierce, 88,of The Terrace at Eddy Memorial in Troy and formerly of Orchard Lane in West Sand Lake for 54 years died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Albany Medical Center Hospital as a result of an automobile accident.

Born in Nutley, NJ, he was the son of the late Frank Pierce and Lena (Storrs) Pierce and husband of Edna M. diDomenica Pierce for 64 years. He was a 1940 graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in 'Edna'. While at Denison, he was president of Kappa Sigma fraternity in 1939.

Mr. Pierce was an insurance underwriter working with Burroughs-Distell Insurance in West Sand Lake, retiring in 2000.

An active member of the Church of the Covenant in Averill Park, Mr. Pierce was a member of the Trustees and the choir. He loved his community and was active in all aspects of life there, including the 1st president of the West Sand Lake PTA, member of the Sand Lake Recycling Committee, a 10 gallon blood contributor to the American Red Cross, an active founding member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake and had 56 years of perfect attendance. He received the George Hixson Fellow Award from Kiwanis International. In addition, his interests included billiards, birding, tennis and vegetable gardening. Phil was an Army veteran of World War II stationed in Panama serving 5 years and holding the rank of Captain.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Mary and husband Robert LaFleur of North Greenbush, Virginia (Dee) and husband C. Fredrick Erickson of West Sand Lake and Kathryn and husband Gregory Benson of Stephentown; five grandchildren, Britton (Amy) Erickson, Katherine (Fred) Sfeir, Amanda Erickson and Zachary and Ashley Benson; a great grandchild, Lauren Paige Sfeir; a nephew, Frank Hamilton of Missouri; a niece, Joan Kritzberg of California; several additional nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Pierce Hamilton.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 6:00 PM at the Church of the Covenant Route 43 in Averill Park.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Sunday from 4-6 PM.

Interment Sand Lake Union Cemetery in Sand Lake.
