Peter J. Cooper, 63

Averill Park - Peter J. Cooper, 63, of Harvey Way died Sunday September 14, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 19 month battle with pancreatic cancer complicated by type 2 diabetes.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late James Fenimore Cooper Sr. and Mary (Tufts) Cooper and husband for 41 years of Judy A.(Dickel) Cooper. He had resided in West Sand Lake and Averill Park most of his life and attended Averill Park High School.

Peter was a mechanic and bus driver for the Averill Park Central School District. He was formerly employed at Goodyear, Montgomery Ward, Bob Karl`s Sales and Service and was owner and operator of Cooper`s Tire Service in West Sand Lake.

He was Vice President of the Mutual Association for the Protection Against Horse Thieves, had 22 years of local softball leagues and Averill Park High School Baseball. He served as a Sargent in the Marine Corp and was a combat Viet Nam veteran and combat Dominican Republic veteran.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his two sons, Darin J. Cooper Sr. of Averill Park and Brian J. (Shannon) Cooper of Rexford; his grandchildren, Darin J. Cooper Jr. of Averill Park, Ashley Cooper of Troy, Madison Cooper of Rexford and Justin Cooper of Rexford; three brothers, James (Pat) Cooper, Richard Cooper and William (Linda) Cooper; a sister Mary Agnes Cooper; two sisters-in-law , Patricia Dwyer and Sandy Cooper and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Flora Cooper.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Mehdi and the great infusion nurses on the 9th floor of the Albany VA Hospital; and Nancy Nelson and Marian Boyajian of Palliative Care. A special thank you to Nancy "Gus" Crosier. We would also like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Dana Farber (where Peter proudly tested experimental drugs) for keeping the hope alive for a couple months longer.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 9:00 AM at DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 4392 Route 150 West Sand Lake at 9:30 AM at St. Henry`s Church in Averill Park where a Mass of Christian Burial.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-8 PM.

Interment will be in Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Peter J. Cooper to the Jimmy Fund Dana- Farber Cancer Institute 10 Brookline Place, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-9924.
