Paul H. Griggs, Sr.

Brunswick - Paul H. Griggs, Sr. was born on July 25, 1930 in Somerville, Massachusetts and died on January 19, 2010 at the Stratton VA Hospital in Albany, New York. He grew up during the Depression in New England and spent many hours of his childhood as a golf caddy earning money for his family. He graduated from North Quincy High School (Massachusetts) and attended Prairie Bible Institute (Three Hills Alberta Canada) as well as Gordon College (Massachusetts). He was an Assistant Pro at Worcester Country Club from 1949 to 1950. Mr. Griggs entered the United States Air Force in 1954 where he served for 29 years, primarily as a First Sergeant looking out for the welfare of his troops. His service took him around the world including California, Wyoming, Louisiana, Iceland, the Philippines, Massachusetts, Illinois, Turkey, Texas and places in between. A lifelong golfer with two holes-in-one, he worked as a greens keeper in central New York after his retirement. He was an avid Red Sox fan most of his life before switching allegiance to the Yankees in 2003.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Carol Griggs of Wynantskill, New York, and his grandchildren, Caitlin and Asdis Griggs. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, David and Virginia Griggs of Cerritos, California, sister and brother-in-law, Bethel and Andrew Kip of Bradenton, Florida, his former wife, Thorunn Gunnarsdottir of Iceland, several nephews and a niece.

A memorial service will be held in April for family and friends. If desired, contributions in Paul's memory may be made to the American Stroke Association, Habitat for Humanity or the American Red Cross.
