Nancy Hannigan Obituary

Wynantskill - Nancy J. Burt Hannigan, 80, of Church Street died Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by her family after a long courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late John Alden Burt and Elsie Ida Burt and wife of James G.  Hannigan, Sr. for more than 60 years.  She had resided in Wynantskill all her life and was a 1955 graduate of Troy High School.

Nancy’s greatest joy was her family.  She was a devoted and proud stay at home Mother and Grandmother. She treated everyone as though they were “The Favorite”. She loved to go to her children’s and grandchildren's events never missing an activity. Nancy was an avid bingo player, enjoyed camping, bowling, fishing and traveling.  For many years she and Jim visited friends in Bermuda, which were made while vacationing there. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Everyone was welcome and you always left physically and emotionally full. Going out to breakfast with her family and friends was the highlight of her day. For the last 25 years she wintered in Florida. Her favorite aspect of Florida was the cherished friendships she made. Nancy was the keeper of the cookie jar for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (THE JAR WAS NEVER EMPTY.)

She was the former Conference Hotel Coordinator for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. Through her travel with her husband, she made many friends from across the United States and Canada, with whom she maintained constant contact.  She was an election poll official for the Town of North Greenbush for numerous years.

She was a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church and a member of the Rosary Altar Society in Wynantskill, a life member and Past President of the Wynantskill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer dispatcher for the North Greenbush Ambulance and Wynantskill Fire Company.

Nancy will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband and her children, Colleen (Daniel) Bornhorst, James G. (Debra) Hannigan, Jr., Maureen Hannigan, Kathleen (John) Middleton, Janice (Sean) Kerwin, Kimberly Hannigan and Patrick Hannigan; a son-in-law, Steven Brochu; two brothers, Elmer Burt and James Burt; 21 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Joann M. Brochu and her sister, Myrtle V. Miller.

Relatives and friends may call at the St. Jude the Apostle Church  43 Brookside Avenue Wynantskill on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 4-7 PM.
