Michael J. Thayer, 58

Nassau - Michael J. Thayer, 58, of Andrews Way died peacefully at home on Friday, May 2, 2014, in the loving embrace of his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Jamestown, NY, Michael was the cherished son of Elizabeth Berglund Thayer of Punta Gorda, Florida, and the late James E. Thayer. An environmentalist who loved swimming and sailing, he designed and built a beautiful home on Burden Lake, where he raised his dear son, Nick, and lived with his beloved wife, Maggie Fusco. Michael loved doing things for others: he was quick to help, patient, and kind. He had a keen sense of wry humor. He spent countless hours cooking superb meals for family and friends. He especially enjoyed taking people out on the lake for sunset cruises and listening to music by the fireside.

Michael loved literature and science. After earning his B.A. from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and his M.L.S. from The University at Albany, Michael was a librarian at Hudson Valley Community College for 20 years; he specialized in the health sciences. He was a gifted teacher who loved his students, his work, and his colleagues; he was active in the faculty senate.

Michael is also survived by his sister Alison (Michael) DiFiore, Reidsville, Georgia; sister-in-law Sharon Kubisch Thayer, Buffalo, New York; aunt Mary Berglund, St. Petersburg, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father as well as siblings Brian F., Ann E., and Cheryl L. Thayer.

A Memorial Service will be announced later this month.

Michael's family would like to thank The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County; Samaritan Hospital; Dr. Darshan Arora; and the Rubin Dialysis Center. The family will always remember the outstanding care and affection that Michael received from everyone at NYOH Troy and is especially grateful to Dr. Regina Resta and the late Dr. Fred Shapiro, whose compassionate care enabled him to enjoy the last years of his life to the fullest.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Michael J. Thayer to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), 383 Main Avenue 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851.
