Marion C. Bame Smauder, 91

West Sand Lake- Marion C. Smauder, 91, of Orchard Lane died suddenly Thursday, October 19, 2006.

Born in West Sand Lake where she spent her entire life. She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mabel Bame and the wife of the late William J. Smauder.

She was educated in the Averill Park Central High School, attended Russell Sage College of Troy and graduated from New Paltz State College with a degree in teaching.

She taught grades three and four in the West Sand Lake Elementary School for 32 years and enjoyed every minute of her days in the classroom.

Marion was a very active member of the former Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church of West Sand Lake where she directed and sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and worked on many committees. When her church and the former West Sand Lake Methodist Church united, she was on the committees for union and for building the new Salem United Methodist Church on Shaver Road in West Sand Lake. Here in the new church she continued to serve in various ways. She was an ardent member of the United Methodist Women where she served as treasurer and program planning. She was president of the 3M's, sang in the choir and for twelve years was chair person of the Christian Education Department. Marion planned and directed many programs for the Church School and for good times at the church families' gatherings. At the annual church fair you would always find her at the Church Out Reach booth.

She was a member of the Sand Lake Teacher's Association, the NYS Teacher's Association, the Sand Lake Historical Society and the Ilium Literary Club of Troy.

Survivors include three grandsons, Scott Northrup, Timothy Kelly and Brian Kelly (Rebecca); four great grandchildren, Timothy Jr. and Jamie Kelly, children of Tim and Lian and Lillian Kelly, children of Brian; a cousin, Kathryn Ray of Troy and a niece, Donna Fitzpatrick of Averill Park. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Carole Sue Kelly.

A memorial service will be held at Salem United Methodist Church on Shaver Road in West Sand Lake on Sunday at 4pm with Rev. Patricia Bush, Pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church Sunday from 3-4pm, prior to the service.
