Joseph Martire, 100

Troy - Joseph Martire, 100, of Troy died Friday, April 03, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in San Giovanni in Fiore Italy, he was son of the late Leonardo Martire and Maria Bianco Martire and husband of the late Lucy Centrella Martire. He had resided in Italy until the age of 11 when he immigrated to the United States to Troy .

Mr. Martire was a self-employed barber for over 70 years operating Grand Street Barber Shop on Fifth Avenue inTroy until the late 60's and then worked out of a shop on River Street, retiring at 90.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Troy and a member of its Holy Names Society. He was also a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks, the Barbers Union and Troy Senior Center. Joe enjoyed wine making and his vegetable garden and many years ago was on several bowling leagues.

Survivors include, two daughters, Mary Alice (Paul) Lucier of Pittstown and Ruth J. (John) Mackey of Canton, MI; a son, Dr. Joseph E. Martire of Springfield, MO; a brother, Salvatore Martire of Troy; his grandchildren, Laurie Marie Lucier of Troy, Renee N. Lucier DeCelle of Troy, Lisa A. Mackey of Canton, MI and Brian J. (Carla) Mackey of South Lyon, MI; his great grandchildren, Anastasia Piwko and Molly Grace and Emma Elizabeth Mackey; a special friend, Mary Treffiletti of Rensselaer and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Martire.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 9:00 AM at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy and at 9:30 AM at St. Patrick's Church Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-8 PM.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy.

The family wishes to thank Drs. Alan and Alfredo Cruz, the nursing staff of St. Mary's Hospital and Hospice for their care.
