Joseph E. Campbell, 82

Defreestville Joseph E. Campbell, 82, of Douglas Avenue, retired area optician, died Sunday at Samuel Stratton V A Medical Center Albany of natural causes.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Daniel J. and Anna Nagengast Campbell and husband for 60 years of Ruth Barnum Campbell. He had resided in Defreestville for many years and attended Siena College and was a graduate of the Franklin Arsenal Opticianal School in Philadelphia.

Joseph first worked as an optician with Dr. C.J. Daley in Albany and later opened his own business, Campbell Opticians in Albany and Rensselaer, where he practiced for forty years, retiring 11 years ago.

An Army veteran of World War II, Joseph was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Commanders Club. He was also a former member of the Albany Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Aurania Club and Cordial Greens Country Club. He was an active member of Blooming Grove Reformed Church in Defreestville where he served as Youth Fellowship Advisor for ten years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Mrs. William (Sarah) 'Sally' Becker of Greenwich and Nancy Petteys and husband Edward of Defreestville; two sons, William J. Campbell and wife Andrea of Delhi, NY and David Robert Campbell of Defreestville; four grandchildren, Johanna Prince, Andrew and Benjamin Campbell and Kate Becker and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear friends, Fred and Jane Muhlfelder of Loudonville and Dr. Kerry Harbeck of Delmar. He was predeceased by two sisters, Nan Barry and Rita Sullivan and two brothers, Dr. Daniel J. Campbell and Robert Campbell.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00AM from Gardner Earl Chapel at Oakwood Cemetery Troy with Rev. William H. O'Dell, Pastor of the Grafton Baptist Church, officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues in Troy on Tuesday from 5-8PM. Interment Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Campbell to the Blooming Grove Reformed Church 706 Blooming Grove Drive Rensselaer, NY 12144.
