Colonel Joseph W. Bowman, 83

Bennington, VT-Colonel Joseph W. Bowman, 83,of Bennington, VT and formerly of Poestenkill died Thursday, March 16, 2006 at South Western Vermont Medical Center in after a long illness.

Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Wilbur Bowman and Minnie (O'Dell) Bowman. and husband for 60 years of Jane Stacy Bowman.

He had resided in Poestenkill for many years and the past 15 years wintered in Florida and summered in the Adirondacks and was a graduate of Troy High School.

Mr. Bowman operated his family business Joseph Bowman & Sons, a collar and cuff manufacturing firm in Troy being the last one to close in 1972 and later, for several years, worked at Military and Naval Affairs.

He was a very active communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy and a member of the Vestry and a member of the Apollo Masonic Lodge F&AM Troy. During World War II, he was a Corporal in the Army Air Force Base Unit. Upon discharge, he was a member of the New York State Army National Guard where he rose to the rank of Colonel, retiring in 1984. During World War II, he served in the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign. He received the victory medal for WW II, the American Campaign Medal and the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Nancy Kelley (Doug) of Averill Park; three sons, Robert Bowman (Lynn) of Omaha, NE, Jonathan Bowman of Averill Park and Mark Bowman (Michele) of Poestenkill; a brother, James H. Bowman (Arden) of Eagle Mills; a sister, Lois DeMartino of FL; ten grandchildren, Jeffrey and Kristen Kelley and Stacy, Courtney, Kelsey, Scott, Shaun, Michael, Elizabeth and Sarah Bowman; two great grandchildren, Olivia and Jacob Kelley and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Riker.

The Holy Eucharist celebrating Joe's life will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church 146 First Street Troy with Rev. Dr. Harold Carrier, Rector.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy Sunday from 4-8 PM.

Interment Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.
