John J. (Smitty) Smith, 73

Grafton John J. (Smitty) Smith, 73, of Old Road, died peacefully Friday at his home after a short illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late Nehill Francis and Helen Quillman Smith and husband for 47 years of Janet M. Knowlson Smith. He was a longtime resident of Grafton and was a graduate of Troy High School.

Smitty was highway supervisor for the Rensselaer County Highway Department for 15 years, retiring in December of 1993.

He was an avid train buff and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, John N. Smith (Linda) of Berlin; a daughter Cathy Hewitt (Charley) of Grafton; a sister Barbara Danbury (George) of Grafton; a brother-in-law, Jack Knowlson of Boulder City, NV; six grandchildren, Chris and Chad Hewitt and Brandy, Mackenzie, Forreste and Amber Smith; a great-grandson Anthony Bender and several nieces and nephews, Peter and Chris Danbury, Bernice Danbury, Barbara Munsey and Holly Knowlson. He was predeceased by a great-granddaughter Kylie Yerdon.

Funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.
