John P. Buckley, 79

Troy John P. Buckley, 79, former City Manager of Troy, of Locust Avenue, died Friday at Samaritan Hospital Troy, after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, he was son of the late John F. and Frances Callahan Buckley. He had resided in Troy most of his life and was a graduate of La Salle Institute and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Mr. Buckley was employed for 18 years as the Commissioner of the Department of Public Utilities and initiated the building of Troy's modern water system. For 15 years he served as Troy's City Manager during which time he was responsible for numerous civic improvements including the construction of the new City Hall and the Riverfront Park.

He was a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Troy and was a Past President of the Society of the Friends of St. Patrick, a life member of the Ancient Order of Hibernian's, a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks, the Noble-Callahan American Legion Post, Korean War Veteran's Association, American Water Works Association and a member of the Board of Directors of La Salle Institute. He was the recipient of the Troy "Man of the Year" award in 1979 and the Rensselaer Key Award in 1990. Mr. Buckley was a US Navy veteran serving as a Navy Carrier Pilot in World War II and the Korean War.

He is survived by a cousin Michael Case of Watertown, MA. He was predeceased by a sister Helen Buckley.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 9:30am from Sacred Heart Church Pawling Avenue Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues in Troy on Tuesday from 4-8pm. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of John P. Buckley to Sacred Heart Church 310 Spring Avenue Troy, NY 12180 or the La Salle Institute Building Fund 174 Williams Road Troy, NY 12180.
