Joan L. Winhold, 79

TROY- Joan L. Winhold, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2009 at her home in Troy after a battle with leukemia. She was born in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, and was the daughter of the late Roy R. Rumball and Gertrude Patterson Rumball. Joan received her early education in Orillia, Ontario, and later graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in Modern Languages (1951). In addition, she was granted a Piano Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

She married her beloved husband, E. John Winhold, in 1951, and they have been together for over 57 years. They lived in Cambridge, MA and Philadelphia before moving to Troy, NY in 1957. Joan was a loving wife, a homemaker and a devoted mom and grandmother. She had a warm and caring personality and was always interested in other people. While her family will miss her terribly, they know she is with the Lord.

For 13 years Joan was the Director of Literacy Volunteers in Troy retiring in 1991. After retiring, she continued to volunteer for many years teaching workshops and tutoring. She was a member of Vineyard Community Church of Cohoes.

Survivors in addition to her husband include her loving daughters, Alison (John) Saxelby of Lowell, MA, Claire Winhold of Framingham, MA, and Beth (Shawn) Muthersbaugh of Troy; a brother, Lionel Rumball of Orillia, Ontario; and her grandchildren Heather and Meredith Saxelby, and Megan, John and Michael Muthersbaugh.

Friends are invited to call at Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Ave, Troy, from 4-8 p.m., Monday February 23rd. A service to celebrate the life of Joan Winhold will be held on Tuesday February 24th at 11am, at Brunswick Church , 42 White Church Lane (5 miles east of Troy just south of Rt. 2) with a luncheon following. Pastor Rick Colquhoun from Vineyard Community Church of Cohoes will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Joan L. Winhold may be made to Literacy Volunteers, 1915 5th Ave, Troy, NY 12180; The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer, NY 12144; or Vineyard Community Church, 20 White Street, Cohoes, NY 12047.
