Jean H. Brower, 89

Malone, NY - Jean H. Brower, 89, of State Route 11, Malone died December 18th, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She had been a resident of the Nursing Home since September.

Born in Hudson, NY on July 12, 1922, she was daughter of the late Captain Edward Lewis Harder and Lulu Blanche Rogers Harder. She was raised in Claverack, in Columbia County, NY until her parent's death and then was raised in neighboring Philmont by her Aunt, Clara Harder. She was a 1941 graduate of Roeliff Jansen High School in Hillsdale and attended Central College in Pella, Iowa and graduated from the Mildred Elley School of Business in Albany in 1947.

She was united in marriage to William H. Brower, Jr. of Wynantskill on November 15, 1947. He predeceased her in 1981. They made their home on Pinewoods Avenue in Troy until moving to Watertown, NY in 1978. Jean most recently moved to Malone in 2009.

Mrs. Brower was employed as a stock checker on Wall Street during WWII, served as Secretary to the Principle of George Washington School and worked at the gift shop of Samaritan Hospital in Troy for many years. Upon moving to Watertown, she volunteered thousands of hours at the gift shop at the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital.

She loved to knit, and made hundreds of pair of mittens for children of soldiers at Fort Drum, bandages for needy in Africa and afghans and sweaters for family members and others. She was active in the Stone Presbyterian Church in Watertown and the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill.

Survivors include three sons, William E. (Donna Holcolm) Brower, Wynantskill, Jon (Virginia) Brower, Scotia and Robert (Mary) Brower, Malone, NY; a son-in-law, Francis Woods, Redwood, NY; 11 grandchildren: William R. Brower of Troy, Tara (David) Wells of Loudenville, Jamie (Steven) Travis of Glenmont, Nicole (Shane Dobiesz) Brower of Scotia, Michael Brower of Guilderland, Amanda Brower of Buffalo, Paige (Daniel Bryant) Brower of Plattsburgh, Elizabeth and Maxwell Brower of Malone, Peter B. (Darcy) Wood of Kouts, IN and Briana Wood of Rochester and 2 step-grandchildren Chris (Michael Bradt) Walker and Steve (Richette) Massoth of Scotia; and 7 great grandchildren, 9 step-great grandchildren . She was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Jean Wood and a son, Roger Charles Brower.

Relatives and friends are invited to a service at the Gardner Earl Chapel at Oakwood Cemetery in Troy on Wednesday, December 21 at 2 pm with Rev. Glenn Van Oort, Interim Pastor of the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, officiating.
