James William Smith, 59 Baltimore, MD James William Smith, 59, of Baltimore, Maryland, died on August 11, 2001 in New Rochelle, NY. The son of Elva Hills Smith of Troy and the late William Ewing Smith, James was born in Troy on July 8, 1942. He attended Troy High School and the University of Rochester, where he received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics, later earning graduate degrees in Mathematics at the State University of New York at Buffalo and in Computer Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. For over thirty years James taught at Towson University in Baltimore, in both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. At the time of his death, he held the title of Associate Professor. An avid outdoorsman, Jim camped, hiked and biked in many areas of North America during his summer vacations. Throughout his life he maintained a special love of music, in his youth as a performer and always as a keen listener and supporter of others. In addition to his mother James leaves a brother, David Hills Smith and his wife Linden (Vicki) Smith of New Rochelle, NY, and a sister, Elizabeth Smith- Eisenhauer and her husband Donald of Deerfield, IL. Also surviving are a nephew, James Edwin Eisenhauer and a niece, Juliet Tompkins Smith. Funeral service will be held at Christ Church United Methodist 35 State Street, Troy, NY on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. corner of Pawling at Maple Avenues in Troy, NY on Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the James W. Smith Scholarship Endowment, c/o the Towson University Foundation, Inc. (8000 York Rd., Towson, MD 21252-0001) or The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research (1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714).
