George P. Groft, Jr.

George P. Groft, Jr., age 92, of  North Greenbush, NY died on May 16, 2016. 

Born on April 3, 1924 in Cresson PA, he was the son of George P. and Mabel E. Ream Groft. 

He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1942 and attended Ohio State University until he enlisted in the U.S. Army. As a member of Company B, 405 Infantry Regiment and 102 Division (Ozarks) from 1943 until 1945, he was awarded a Purple Heart and Honorable Discharge. 

In 1949 he graduated from Kent State University, OH and later received his MS in Mathematics from Trinity College, Hartford, CT in 1960. He married Nancy K. Shuttleworth of North Canton, Ohio in 1949 and they lived in Hartford, Simsbury and Canton Center, CT for over 60 years before recently moving to the Albany area. 

George retired from Traveler’s Insurance Co, Hartford, CT in 1988 as a director after 39 years of service.

 He served as a volunteer for the Simsbury Light Opera, the Junior Achievement of Hartford, and President of the Traveler’s Mens Club. 

Besides his wife of 65 years, he leaves his daughter Tammis K. Groft and her husband David P. Quinn of Albany, NY and two grandchildren Hallee M. Quinn of Petaluma, CA and Elias K. Quinn of Los Angeles, CA. His sister Georgia M. Watkins of OH and her two sons, Ronald Watkins of OH and Robert Watkins of CA predeceased him. His sister Dorothy V. Outwater of CA also predeceased him. Her children Stephanie M. Mosely and Wesley McKusick live in Round Rock and Buda, TX, respectively. 

A memorial service will be celebrated at the convenience of the family. Donations may be sent to the First Congregational Church of Canton Center 184 Cherry Brook Road,  P.O. Box 133 Canton Center, CT 06020-0133.
