Evelyn C. (Schmitt) Matthews

Troy - Evelyn Matthews, age 86, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 6, 2018 in Troy NY. She was predeceased by her husband, John Matthews. She will be greatly missed by children JoAnne Schrader and her partner Bea Conlee of Glenville NY, Deborah Neckorcuk and her husband Richard of Nashua NH, John Matthews Jr and his wife Susan of Troy NY and Dorothy Hanna and her husband Gary of Troy NY. Also by her grandchildren and great grandchildren Kristina Elliott and her children Kassidy and Henry of Summerville SC, Jessica Errico and her husband Gene and daughter Emelia of Glenville NY, Stephen Neckorcuk and his wife Alyssa of Waltham MA, Christopher Matthews of Troy NY, Kaitlyn Schwendeman and her husband Andrew of Troy NY, Robert Neckorcuk and his fiancé Kayla of Woodinville WA and Meaghan Hanna of Troy NY. She also was a foster mom to many children for more than 20 years. 

Mrs. Matthews was born and raised in Queens NY, raised her family in Massapequa Park NY and Petersburg NY, and retired in Summerville SC and Troy NY. Her greatest pride was her family. She was a strong matriarch who was always there for them and taught them how to care. She spent most of her life sharing her time and talents . She was active in the Lutheran Churches where she attended, she was a 4H leader, she volunteered time with the town’s youth commission. Evelyn and John spent much of the early years of their retirement volunteering with the Red Cross disaster relief team, traveling to help others after devastating disasters throughout the US and Caribbean. 

A service celebrating her life will be held at the end of April. Donations may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief fund, Lutheran World Relief or a local charity of your choosing whose mission is to help others.
