Edwin J. 'Ed' Leadbetter, 88

Brunswick - Edwin J. 'Ed' Leadbetter, 88, of Country Way died Thursday July 17, 2008 at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center Troy after a long illness.

Born in Dobbs Ferry, NY, he was son of the late Horace Leadbetter and Harriet (Roth) Leadbetter and husband for 58 years of Ellen (Crotty) Leadbetter.

He resided at Dobbs Ferry until 1959 and many years in the Troy area and attended Dobbs Ferry schools.

Ed worked in the maintenance department as a glazier at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for 23 years retiring in 1990. Prior to that he worked with his father and brother in a house painting business in Dobbs Ferry and also for Emma Willard School and Hudson Valley Community College.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army with the 65th Infantry Division in Central Europe. He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Eagle Mills (formerly Memorial United Methodist Church), a Past Master of Diamond #555 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Dobbs Ferry, Apollo #13 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Troy, Watervliet Lodge of Elks, the Troy Chapter of AARP and the former American Legion in Cropseyville. Ed was well-known for his volunteer service to the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary for many years where he operated the patient elevator. Many people remember him for his ready smile and his vest covered with various 'buttons'. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing as members of the Tamarac Twirlers and attended many square dancing events in the area.

Survivors in addition to his devoted wife include two sons, Mark J. (Sue) Leadbetter of Melrose and Bryan C. (Alana) Leadbetter of Rochester; a brother, Horace (Lily) Leadbetter of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Dacia (Michael) Maynard, Daryl Leadbetter and Kristin and Michael Leadbetter and two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Joe Maynard. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Wolfe.

Funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at the Hope United Methodist Church 566 Brunswick Road in Eagle Mills with Rev. David Martin, Pastor, officiating.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc. 276 Pawling Avenue Troy on Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9PM.

Interment will be in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Ed Leadbetter to the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary 2215 Burdett Avenue Troy, NY 12180.
